Surreal Echoes Case Study

I am proud to present Surreal Echoes, an original documentary project that I began developing for YouTube in August 2026. My channel examines the cultural institutions and shared experiences that helped shape Generation X, including how they formed, what they were like at their peak, and where they fit into society today. Research, script, narration, visual planning, and production by Donna Lee Hellmann.

Are Soap Operas Dead? (21:15)

I created this video for people who grew up at their mothers’ knees, watching “her stories” alongside them. Many of us became hooked on the genre ourselves, only to give up on it after a favorite show was canceled.

The Challenge

I wanted to show how soap operas began, how they dominated popular culture for decades, and why, although they are no longer as popular as they once were, they continue to maintain a dedicated fanbase.

My Approach

Although I was already familiar with the subject, I researched the work of professional journalists and consulted scholarly sources to gather information, confirm important facts, and develop an organized outline. I then transformed that research into a compelling narrative that combined historical context, cultural analysis, and emotional nostalgia while answering the video’s central question.

The Deliverables

I developed the script, production notes, B-roll suggestions, title, and YouTube description. For this independent portfolio project, I also handled the narration, editing, and production of the finished video. Write Share’s client services focus specifically on research, scriptwriting, structural editing, and optional visual notes.

The Result

During its first month on YouTube, the video maintained a click-through rate of approximately 7%. YouTube recommended the video in 25.7% of its eligible impressions, and viewers who discovered it through those impressions watched for an average of 7 minutes and 5 seconds. These results indicate that the topic and presentation attracted viewer interest while the documentary itself gave YouTube’s native audience a reason to keep watching.

Additional Documentary Samples

Are Department Stores Dead? (26:22)

This documentary examines a fascinating and rapidly disappearing touchpoint in retail history. I address the rise and fall of a cultural institution built on grand architecture, attentive customer service, consumer choice, and the aspirations of the American middle class.

Are Shopping Malls Dead? (23:13)

In this documentary, I explore both the social history and architecture of the traditional American shopping mall. From its beginnings as an experiment conceived by an Austrian immigrant inspired by European town squares to its longtime role as a third space for teenagers and families, this piece is steeped in nostalgia.

Are Sitcoms Dead? (20:29)

I dive deep into media history to examine the beginnings of the sitcom and explore how and why it dominated American television for decades. I also compare the shared viewing experiences and appointment television culture of the recent past with today’s increasingly fragmented viewing habits.
